The ECOWAS Summit that takes place in Accra today marks the end of second year-long period of stewardship by President Akufo-Addo as the chairman of the West African bloc
The 61st ordinary session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will take place in Accra today (Sunday 3 July 2022).
The heads of state will be considering reports from the Council of Ministers meeting, which was held from 30 June to 1 July 2022 in Accra, and other issues affecting the West African sub-region.
The summit marks the end of President Akufo-Addo’s second year-long period of stewardship as the chairman of the sub-regional bloc.
He will be hosting 12 of his peers instead of 15, following the suspension of Burkina Faso, Guinea and Mali over unconstitutional changes of government in those three countries..
In June 2021, in a mark of confidence for his leadership, President Akufo-Addo’s mandate was renewed by his colleague heads of state for a further year.
The move coincided with the launch of institutional reforms geared towards reducing the number of ECOWAS Commission statutory appointees from 15 to seven as well as streamline operational costs.
