The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has inaugurated members of its Disaster Management Committee with the Ashanti Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in attendance.
The inauguration took place at the KMA Conference Hall in Kumasi and brought together heads of departments and security services within the metropolis.

The Metro Coordinating Director, Mr. Francis Dwira Darko, who inaugurated the committee on behalf of the Metropolitan Chief Executive, said the move is in compliance with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) which enjoins Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to ensure disaster preparedness at the local level.

He stated that Kumasi continues to face challenges including flooding, fire outbreaks in markets and homes, and other emergencies that require a coordinated response.

The Ashanti Regional Director of NADMO, who graced the occasion, commended KMA for the step and charged the committee to be active and effective. According to him, the committee has been carefully constituted with experts and leaders to promote trust, data sharing, joint training and real action in disaster management.

He reminded members that disaster management must be proactive and community-centered to safeguard lives, livelihoods and the environment.
The newly inaugurated committee will be responsible for assessing disaster risks, coordinating emergency response, undertaking public education, and advising the Assembly on measures to reduce disaster vulnerability.

Members of the committee, drawn from KMA, NADMO, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Health Service and other allied agencies, have pledged their commitment to serve.
