*Gen Z & X Ghana to Organize Massive Demonstration Against Amendments to the Road Traffic Regulation 2012*

On behalf of the “Gen Z & X Ghana,” formerly known as Concerned Youth of Ghana, we wish to express our vehement objection to the recent amendment to the Road Traffic Regulation 2012 (Regulation 74 of L.I 2180) that was laid before Parliament on June 14, 2024. The proposed amendments seek to grant special privileges to Members of Parliament (MPs) and ministers of state, including the removal of speed limits on their vehicles when used for official duties and the authorization to use sirens to navigate through traffic jams.

We categorically reject these amendments as they are unjust, undemocratic, and a blatant display of privilege that undermines the safety and rights of ordinary Ghanaians. We, the youth and people of Ghana, are appalled by this attempt to create a legal framework that places our leaders above the law and compromises public safety for their convenience.

Our anger, disappointment, and revulsion towards this amendment cannot be overstated. We believe that our leaders should not take the youth and people of Ghana for granted. As such, we are calling for the immediate withdrawal of this amendment. Failure to do so by Friday, July 19, 2024, will result in a massive demonstration where members of the “Gen Z & X Ghana” group will “occupy parliament” in an anti L.I Road Traffic Regulations Amendment demonstration.

This statement serves as an alert and an indication to the people’s representatives—Members of Parliament, both majority and minority groups, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Transport Minister—to do the honorable thing by withdrawing the L.I before the specified date. We are prepared to protest, not just to block the amended L.I, but to initiate a revolution, as recently demonstrated by our peers in Kenya.

We urge all concerned citizens to join us in this critical demonstration to protect our rights and ensure that our leaders are held accountable.

Signed
