BANK OF GHANA TO START PURCHASING GOLD FROM SMALL SCALE MINING SECTOR- VEEP HINTED

H E Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president of the Republic of Ghana has hinted that the government of Ghana has persuaded the Bank of Ghana through an agreement, to start a gold purchase program, targeting purchasing gold from the small scale mining sector.

In a key note address as the special guest of honour at the maiden Responsible Small Scale Miners Awards instituted by the ministry of Lands and natural resources in partnership with the Ghana National association of small scale miners, under the theme, “PROMOTING RESPONSIBLE AND SUBSTAINABLE MINERS” in Accra on Wednesday 22nd December 2021, H E Mahamudu Bawumia expressed that, this is going to be a boost in the small scale mining sector to build the country’s gold reserves.

However he explained that the negative effect of small scale mining has become a major concerns that if it is not carried out responsibly, it can damage our water system and degrade our environment.

He also disclosed that, the passion of H E Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo Addo the president, is to have mining to be done in a responsible manner to benefit every Ghanaian, hence the attempt to sanity the sector through a diverse interventions.

He therefore commend the sector minister Hon Samuel Abu Jinapor and his supporting deputy ministers, Hon Benito Owusu Bio and Hon George Mireku Duka for their commitment in sanitizing the mining sector since their assumption in office.

He concluded by acknowledging the Ghana National association of small scale miners for their corporation with government on the implementation interventions to sanitize the sector.
