Members of the the Ashanti regional branch of the Progressive Transport Owners Association, have expressed concerns about Faded road line markings and the absence of reflectors on most roads within major metropolises of the country which continue to pose a grave danger to drivers and other road users.
According to them the non functionality of traffic signals and street lights on major roads poses as road safety threat with the potential to increase the risk of road traffic crashes particularly going into the Christmas and harmattan season .
They however called on duty bearers to as a matter of urgency fix damaged street and traffic lights across the country by way of reducing carnage on the road . There is more in the following report.
Speaking at the 11th general council meeting of the Ashanti regional branch of the Private Road Transport Owners Association(PROTOA) and sensitization of drivers aimed at curbing carnage on the roads ahead of the Christmas festivities at Kumasi Cultural center, the regional executives of the union , while advising drivers to be cautious and adhere to all road regulations , especially as Christmas festivities approaches , urged pedestrians and passengers to be mindful of how they used the roads and behaved towards drivers , respectively while on the hhighway.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of Proto, Joseph Mensah outlined some concerns which poses threat to drivers and other road users , which includes ,faulty traffic signals , faded road markings , potholes, lack of street lights among others ,a situation he noted has caused a lot carnage on the road. He however called on duty bearers to as a matter of urgency to fix damaged street and traffic lights on major roads across the region which always poses as road safety threat with high potential to increase the risk of road traffic crashes .he also called on stakeholders in the transport sector to engage always ahead of any fuel increase so as to avoid fractions between drivers and passengers .
He revealed that some Municipal and District chief executives have been harassing their members to reduced transport fares whiles they are not been given any directives from the GRTCC and the ministry of transport, he urged the MMDCEs to rather channel their concerns to the ministry not the transport operators.
