*Deputy Defence Minister Announces Funeral Support and Compensation for El‑Wak Stampede Victims’ Families*

Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi met the families of the six young women who lost their lives in the El‑Wak Stadium stampede, holding a solemn gathering at the National Square on Monday to discuss funeral arrangements. In a heartfelt address, the minister announced a GH¢150,000 relief package for each bereaved family – GH¢50,000 to cover funeral expenses and a further GH¢100,000 as compensation – and pledged that senior government officials would stand with them throughout this painful time ¹

He outlined a clear pathway for the families to honor the aspirations of the deceased. “Immediate family members, especially siblings, will be given priority for replacement opportunities in the ongoing recruitment,” Genfi said, adding that if no qualified sibling is available, families may nominate a suitable candidate from the extended family .

He also reassured the injured that, once medically cleared, they will rejoin their colleagues on the training grounds .

The Ministry of Defence is collaborating with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to roll out additional support measures for the victims’ relatives, including psychosocial assistance and other welfare programmes .

“We mourn with you, we stand with the injured, and we remain committed to ensuring the safety and dignity of all applicants,” Genfi posted on social media, echoing President John Dramani Mahama’s condolences and the government’s pledge to support the affected family’s.
