Irene, a native of Nyeri, Kenya, spoke about her bleak upbringing and adulthood in an interview. Irene, the youngest and third child in her family, described how her parents passed away and how her elder siblings ignored her.

When Irene and her friend visited her friend’ s house, they found her brother’ s buddy butchering a sheep. A few minutes later, the brothers’ grandfather stormed the homestead, furious that his grandsons had taken the sheep. They all fled, and the next day, her buddy encouraged her to do the same and join them in Nairobi, where her parents now reside. After three years in liberal, she returned to her hometown. Irene’ s sisters were overjoyed to see her and one of her sisters from Dandora moved in with her, but tensions between the sisters and Irene persisted. A friend of hers who worked in the hotel at the time was able to secure employment for her.
