The 2024 presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has said there is no way the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) will govern this country after 2024.
He said the bad governance the country has witnessed under president Nana Akufo-Addo and his vice, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, is enough for them to begin putting up their handing over notes now.
Addressing party members in Tamale on Monday after being elected as the flag bearer of the NDC, Mr. Mahama said the NPP leadership should be prepared to account for their stewardship after 2024.
“They (the NPP) must start preparing their handover notes, and get ready to account to the people for their stewardship,” Mr Mahama said.
Mr Mahama’s concern comes after the country’s economy has declined and the government waiting for an IMF bailout to balance the Ghana’s fiscal space.
To him, the government has performed abysmally and needs no reelection in 2024.
Reacting to the harsh economic conditions under the NPP, John Mahama said he will operate a lean government when elected as president, unlike Akufo-Addo.
He pledged his commitment to ensuring his government does not become a toll on the public purse.
He said he will not govern with more than 60 ministers.
The former president noted that the ministers who will serve in his government will not be entitled to ex-gratia payments as spelt out in Article 71 of the constitution.
Speaking at the University of Development Studies in Tamale , he asked Ghanaians to hold him to his promise.
Mr Mahama was elected last Saturday to be the flagbearer of the NDC.
He will lead the NDC to elections 2024 as he did in 2012, 2016 and 2020.
