Probe into censure motion against Ofori-Atta’s to be televised live

The ad-hoc committee tasked by Parliament to investigate allegations against Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta begins work today, Tuesday, November 15, 2022.

The eight-member committee, co-chaired by K.T. Hammond, Adansi-Asokwa MP, and Dominic Ayine, Bolgatanga East MP, will telecast live, all its proceedings.

This was disclosed in a tweet by a member of the Committee, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who is also the MP for North Tongu (NDC).

“The Ken Ofori-Atta Vote of Censure Parliamentary Committee will commence sittings tomorrow 15/11/22 at 11am. It’s an absolute delight to announce that the Committee shall sit in public & all proceedings will be broadcast live in the true spirit of transparency and accountability,” he said.

The Censure motion moved by Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu for Mr Ofori Atta’s removal, levelled seven charges against him.

These are; conflict of interest, unconstitutional withdrawals from the Consolidated Fund, illegal payment of oil revenues into offshore accounts, deliberate and dishonest misreporting of economic data to Parliament, fiscal recklessness, alarming incompetence and gross mismanagement of the Ghanaian economy.

Public interest in the increasing demand for the dismissal of the Finance Minister follows worsening economic crisis and hardship largely blamed on excessive borrowing and overspending on consumption.

The decision to telecast it live will satisfy public interest particularly the business community. It will also be closely monitored by the International Monetary Fund which is expected to visit Ghana in the coming days for another round of talks for the bailout Ghana is seeking.

Other NDC members are MP for Klottey-Korle, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings (NDC), Bernard Ahiafor MP for Akatsi South (NDC).

The NPP representatives include the Member of Parliament for Okaikoi Central, Yaw Boahmah, Emmanuel Anyimadu-Antwi who is the MP for Ashanti Akyem Central and the MP for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer.
The committee has 7 days to submit its report to Parliament.
