*UPDN Commend Gov’t over the establishment of the free Media Capacity Enhancement Programme (MCEP)*

United Press for Development Network (UPDN) wishes to commend the Honorable Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, and the government for establishing a free nationwide media training for two hundred and fifty (250) journalists christened Media Capacity Enhancement Programme.

This long-overdue skill capacity training is in the right direction, we consent.

We also congratulate the independent working group and stakeholders namely the National Media Commission (NMC), Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Private Newspaper Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), Institute of Public Relations (IPR-Ghana), Communication Educators Association of Ghana and Civil Society Group in Media that formulated and designed the skill gap analysis of practicing journalists, the framework of the curriculum of the programme, mobilizing human resources (the faculty) among others for a successful implementation of the programme.

We believe this programme will refurbish Ghanaian media excellence and strengthen press freedom for national cohesion.

Constant training and capacity building of the media landscape to play an effective role in governance is very paramount in our development as a country.

Equipping oneself with fresh knowledge and ideas in this rapidly changing and dynamic echo system will enhance practicing journalists with the necessary tools to deliver on the watchdog constitutionally mandated obligation.

Like Alvin Toffler rightly stated, “the illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn”.

For us, this is a refreshing beginning of a new paradigm where media houses set aside competition to collaborate with the sole aim of working together to impact the next media generation and enhance the economic development of the nation.
